Hiring Good Help for Your Automotive Dealership ” Do It Yourself or Use a Professional?

by Linda Greer

Hiring good help is not easy – even considering the high unemployment rate right now. And for your dealership to thrive, its critical that you find the right people the first time out.

So do you run ads and try to fill positions yourself? This is a very time consuming process and takes you (or somebody else in the business) away from doing your own work. Not really the best use of your time.

There are two other methods for filling open jobs to consider: Temp Agencies and Professional Recruiters and Headhunters. Both can relieve you of much of the strain of finding your next new hire and both have an upside and a downside.

Temp agencies, or outsourcing work, can be a perfect choice especially for administrative work. The cost may be a little higher in the hourly rate, and your flexibility about how the work is done may be less, too. But when you have to reduce your work force you also are not in a position of having to fire somebody. You just end the contract.

Agencies and outsourcing are not for everyone, particularly those who like to control every facet of their business. On the plus-side, good agencies and outsourcing services often provide better-qualified people because they have many clients all looking for the same type of service.

They are also usually better informed about the latest trends in their specialty since they are focused on it. Trading off a little control for more freedom and a better qualified worker might be worth a look.

Maybe the best choice (especially for higher salaried staff) is working with a headhunte or recruiting firm. They will take the strain off you of finding, interviewing, and checking references of potential new hires so when the applicant is presented to you for interviewing, you can be more sure they are able to do the job you are filling.

A good, qualified recruiting firm, like Successful Hires, can greatly reduce the expenses associated with hiring the wrong person for the job. (See The High Cost of Hiring Worksheet available on their web site.)

No matter what position your dealership is currently in, it is worth considering the hiring strategies that are proven to work. Even if you do not need anyone today or this week, you may need to find a skilled employee very quickly to fill an unexpected, but critical gap.

The market will turn around eventually. You want your dealership – with the best employees – to be in a good position to capitalize on the turnaround when it comes. Hire the best now whatever it takes.
