MOTORCYCLE CLUBS THE BROTHERHOOD MENTALITY VERSUS THE GANG MENTALITY

I want to talk about the Brotherhood mentality versus the gang mentality in the Motorcycle Club universe. Now for those of you who may be asking what is the difference? I will set up a scene to help give you a peek into the life! At a local Bar a member of a Motorcycle Club walks in he sees four Bikers playing pool, He can tell they are a bit nervous, They see his patches and they know who he is with. Now how does he act? Does he walk over to the pool table knock the 8 ball in the pocket say games over and tell one of them to buy him a beer? Or does he walk over introduce himself and let them know when they are done shooting pool they are welcome to stop over at the bar have a beer and talk with him! One is the gang way of thinking the other is the Brotherhood way of thinking! I really don’t think I need to tell you which is which!

Now one thing everyone needs to remember is all of the original Motorcycle Clubs Started out with the idea of being a tight nit group of Brothers and almost all of these Motorcycle Clubs where friendly to one another. Don’t forget many of the men who started the first MCs where returning home after serving their country during times of war. They were looking for that feeling of Brotherhood here at home that they had when they were fighting for our great country. These were good men seeking adventure, looking to ride their Motorcycles and have a great time with like minded people. Today most Motorcycle Clubs have gone back to that way of Club thinking, There are very few Clubs left that still have the Gang Mentality that was seen mostly during the 70′s threw 90′s. During the late 90′s things had just gotten too far out of hand and most Motorcycle Clubs began to realize the Gang Mentality was not the way it was meant to be and it was not the way they wanted it to be anymore, This was not what the Clubs were started for! Many Clubs who had been friends over the years were now fighting with each other. No one wanted to wear club support gear and things were just not fun anymore. These MC’s had all started their Clubs with the same ideals and ways of thinking, How and why had they grown so far apart that they now hated each other!

Well the answer to how is during the 50′s and 60′s the golden age of the Brotherhood years of Motorcycling, The Motorcycle Clubs were really big. During this great time many of the Biker Movies that came out portrayed Motorcycle Club Members as Bullies and Thugs. The Bikers in these movies would pick on those weaker then them, take over small towns and the Clubs in these Movies all fought each other just like the street gangs of the time! So of course over time many new Bikers came to believe that this was the way it was. So when New Clubs started this was how they would act and the Original Motorcycle Clubs now had members who where young kids looking to prove how tough they were by starting fights with each other. The Original Motorcycle Club Members had been threw real wars together and they were as hard as nails and had nothing to prove to no one! But many younger members felt that they had something to prove and would imitate the Biker Clubs from the Movies they had scene and soon it was Biker against Biker, Brother against Brother, MC against MC. Thus began the Dark age of the Motorcycle Gang Mentality years.

Now for the question Why did this Happen? Well When something Changes the way of thinking and being of Groups like the Motorcycle Clubs so far from their original ideals, You have to ask was it just an accident these movies did this? Or was there more to it? Was there a plan behind it? Is there someone or some group out there that would benefit from having these large groups of Motorcycle Clubs who are run in a very military fashion and are made up of many ex-Military Members fighting against each other? If these Clubs all got along and worked together the world could be a very Different place! The Motorcycle world certainly would be! Are there people out there who are afraid of this happening?

Today there are very few Motorcycle Clubs left that have the Gang Mentality. Most if not all have gone back to the Brotherhood way and the word Gang in the Motorcycle Club world has become taboo. Now as Motorcycle Clubs are beginning to get back to the way it was at the start and trying to put the past behind them, I am noticing that there are more and more Biker movies and TV shows Coming out. Will these shows show MC’s in a good way? Will they go out of their way to stir up the quarrels of the past? Will they show us as mindless thugs or bullies much as the Movie Wild Hogs did? Most Important will we let them influence who we really are? Or have we learned from our mistakes? If all continues to go well we could soon be making our way into the Second Golden age of Motorcycle Club Brotherhood back to where it all Started !!!

All Bikers need to ask themselves one question, “Am I part of the Problem or part of the Solution?”

I have just finished watching the second episode of the new FX show “Son’s of Anarchy”. I have been a fan of the FX Show “The Shield” for years and I have to say, I have enjoyed “Sons of Anarchy” so far. The show has cool bikes and lots of action!

As a Member of an Outlaw Motorcycle Club, I can see many mistakes already in the show. One thing that really surprised me is how people have reacted to the show and me personally. People who know I’m a member of a Motorcycle Club are asking me, “Are you guys really like that???” Most of these people have known me for years! This is just after a two episodes of “Sons of Anarchy” their wondering if I’m leading some kind of double life.

Can you imagine if a show about criminal killer Florists came out? How many people would ask the local florist if they where really like that? One fact of life about being a Biker I have come to except is, it’s real easy for people to think of Bikers as the bad guys. It’s always been that way. I wonder how many Cops had people ask them the same question when the Shield came out? I also wonder how many Police Officers who watch the Shield and know that show is fiction will watch “Sons of Anarchy” and think that’s how Motorcycle Clubs really are! The show “Sons of Anarchy” is fiction and it is way over the top.

Son’s of Anarchy is going to shine a bright light into the Motorcycle Club world. Where as the last ten years have been all about Custom Motorcycle Builders and has led to a lot of people getting into Motorcycle Riding, I believe the next ten years will be all about Motorcycle Clubs. Now this show could be a great thing for Motorcycle Clubs if, in-between all the fictional action, it also focuses on the bond of Brotherhood Motorcycle Clubs are really based on.

Although the opportunity for “Sons of Anarchy” to make a positive statement about Motorcycle Clubs by highlighting the good Motorcycle Clubs do and the positive impact that they have on their communities exists, I have a feeling the show will have a negative impact on Clubs, Independent Bikers, and the Motorcycle Community in overall.

All Motorcycle Clubs are going to need to keep their eyes wide open and watch any new prospects. MCs need to make sure that new prospects are there for the Brotherhood and betterment of the Club and the community, not to live out some misguided fantasy they may have seen on TV or in some Movie. Another big concern of mine is people who will just go out and throw on a set of patches and think they are the “Sons of Anarchy”. The Motorcycle Club world is all about Respect and there is a serious protocol that is followed by all Clubs. I would not recommend violating that protocol in any way.

Motorcycle Clubs have spent the better part of the past 20 years working hard to shake the old biker gang stereotype of the 60′s and 70′s. Now that we have come so close to accomplishing our goals, a show like “Sons of Anarchy” or the upcoming HBO show 1% are here to try and drag our image back into the gang image. How far will these shows set us back? 20-30 Years? I am asking the producers of these shows, there sponsors, and everyone else out there to please remember that Brotherhood is what the Motorcycle Club world is truly about.

Motorcycles And The Culture They Inspire 1868-2017

Motorcycles started out as steam engines strapped on to bicycles in 1868. Soon after the gas engine took its place in the 1900′s there were Motorcycle shops and Dealers all over the World. For awhile, Motorcycle were simply used as transportation. In 1907, when Henry Fords, Ford Motor Company, released the Model-T at a price everyone could afford, the Motorcycle soon went from a necessity to a luxury item.

In the 1940′s, the Motorcycle Culture really took off. An organization called the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) held races and events all over the United States of America. In 1947, held an event in Hollister California. This event was attended by many of the AMA Racing Teams and Motorcycle Clubs. This event marks the beginning of the separation of Motorcyclists which eventually led to the end of Motorcycling in the year 2017.

Newspapers, being what they where in 1947, got a hold of some pictures of Motorcyclists having fun at the event. The press decided to embellish the facts and transformed the story of the first large motorcycle rally into a torrid tale of Bikers taking over a small town! More negative news stories soon followed. Eventually Hollywood joined the Biker bashing by releasing movies that portrayed Motorcyclists as lawless and evil.

The American Motorcycle Association, trying to end the bad press, responded by basically saying that the Newspapers had lied and that it was only 1% of Motorcyclists that caused problems. This resulted in the first ripple in the Unity of the Motorcycle World and the Medias’ hatred of Bikers.

Around the same time, the AMA began adding new requirements for motorcycles to be able to race in AMA sanctioned Races. Those whose motorcycles didn’t meet the new AMA requirements started their own Race Leagues. Because the new Race Leagues/Clubs were not AMA sanctioned, they soon became known as Outlaw Race Leagues/Clubs. Although many Bikers raced in both the AMA and Outlaw Leagues, another great separation had begun.

By the late1960′s, the separation of the Motorcycle Community was becoming more evident. There were now three basic groups. The American Motorcycle Association, Outlaw Clubs, and 1%er Clubs. All 1%ers were Outlaws, but not all Outlaws were considered 1%ers. Over the years, the AMA continued to grow. In addition to racing, they began to champion Motorcycle Rights and Safety. As time went on, others formed independent groups whose goals were similar to that of the AMA. Their inability or outright refusal to work together with the other groups resulted in a further separation of the Motorcycle Community and Culture.

In the 1970′s, rifts began to grow between some of the Outlaw/1% Clubs. By the 1990′s, the media had inflated stories about the conflicts into proportions that rivaled the tall tales of the old west. These tall tales invoked fear of the Outlaw/1% Clubs. Motorcycle Riders were lied to,. They were told to stay away from and fear the Outlaw/1% Clubs. The media began referring to Motorcycle Clubs as Motorcycle Gangs, a term meant to instill fear into the heart of the Public. Stories and rumors began surfacing, claiming these “Gangs” were ruthless and would kill or maim people for little or no reason at all.

By the early 21st Century, every minor conflict between Outlaw/1% Clubs was made into a book, made for TV movie, or docudrama. Titles like “Motorcycle Gang Wars In Your Back Yard” were common. Although real wars, conflicts, and suffering were occurring worldwide, the Corporate owned media chose to report fiction over fact. “The world is full of Kings and Queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams…Black Sabbath”.

In 2009, a conflict between two rival Clubs was captured on Video at a “Biker Build Off” event. The coverage by the media and negative publicity was so overwhelming that in 2010, the United States Government passed a law banning all Outlaw/1% Clubs. In response, the Outlaw/1% Clubs put aside their differences and formed “Bikers United”.

The Bikers fought back stating the law was unconstitutional and un-American. Even as late as 2010, workers still clung to the misguided belief that they had rights and lived in a free Nation. The Bikers fought hard and came very close to winning, but without the support of the Motorcycle Rights Groups, The AMA Clubs, and the Independent Riders, all of whom had been brainwashed into believing the Outlaw Clubs were criminal organizations, they were defeated.

Many of the Outlaw/1% Clubs tried to stay together. The Clubs went underground, but after many raids and constant Government harassment, they had all but disappeared. In 2013, in an effort to ensure that the Outlaw/1% Clubs never returned, the Government decided to outlaw all Motorcycle Clubs and organizations.

The AMA, it’s clubs, and all of the Motorcycle Rights Organizations United in an effort to battle the Governments oppression. They tried to use many of the same tactics and strategies that the Outlaw/1% Clubs used. Unfortunately, the Government was much smarter and stronger this time around. They had learned many lessons in their fierce battles with the Outlaw/1% Clubs, and they used what they had learned against the united Clubs and Organizations. With no Outlaw/1% Clubs left to assist them and without the support of the Independent Riders, the United Clubs and Organizations were defeated.

In 2015, the Government passed a law that made it illegal to even look like an Outlaw on a Motorcycle. The Independent Riders banned together to try and fight the law, but by this time their numbers were few and there wasn’t anyone left to show them how to fight for their rights. After a brief protest, they too were soundly defeated.

In 2017, What was now a “Global Government”, in its infinite wisdom, decided that Motorcycles posed a danger to the public. They passed a law banning Motorcycle manufacture and use and destroyed all existing Motorcycles. This brought to an end, the History of Motorcycles. It would take until the year 2093 before anything even close to resembling a Motorcycle reappeared.

As a historian looking back at the History of Motorcycles and the Culture it created, it amazes me how powerful the Motorcycle Culture could have been had they not let every little thing separate them. Instead of embracing something they had in common and working together to protect it, the instead let their differences, the media, and the government divide them.

By the time the Bikers realized how much they were connected and needed each other, it was too late. Their numbers were certainly sufficient to achieve victory, but their failure to come together as Brothers and Sisters and work for the common good ultimately spelled their demise. Had they been victorious, it may have been enough to stop all of the oppression and tyranny that soon followed.

History is full of stories just like this one, over and over again. The ones who love and honor Freedom the most are taken down first and the rest fall like dominoes. Until the rebellion of 2057, we as a Global Society did not realize how important it was to put aside our differences. It may have taken awhile, but we finally figured it out…Just in time!

When we were growing up the normal progression towards riding a two-wheel bicycle began with a tricycle. These three wheels helped us to grow accustom to pedaling and steering while providing the balance of three wheels and minimizing falls. Then we moved up to a two-wheel bicycle with training wheels. The same concept and advantages applied until we were ready to go it alone with only two wheels. Eventually, if we were bold and daring enough, our pedaling was replaced with a high performance motor and our two-wheeled bicycles became a motorcycle.

With the advent of a three-wheeled motorcycle known as a motorcycle trike, today the trend is being kicked backwards. Discovering how a motorcycle trike is created, along with its advantages and disadvantages, is important to know when considering this mode of transportation.

How a Motorcycle Trike Is Created

Prior to actually purchasing a ready-made motorcycle trike, the early day motorcycle trike was created through a conversion process. A conversion kit is needed in converting a two-wheeled motorcycle to trike. It could cost upwards of $9,000 for this conversion kit. It was, and still is, recommended that a professionally qualified conversion mechanic perform the switch.

By removing the rear wheel the conversion is accomplished. This rear wheel is replaced with the bolting on of two wider wheels that sit on the motorcycle’s differential and driveshaft. Other added on features include a rear wheel fender and other accessories selected by the owner. The conversion kit is then painted so that it matches the original motorcycle’s colors.

Advantages

A motorcycle trike features certain advantages over a traditional motorcycle. Stability is the obvious advantage. For example, when stopping for a red light, the driver does not need to straddle their motorcycle while waiting for the light to change. Additionally, when transporting a passenger there is a safety feature. The risk of tipping the bike over and compromising the safety of the passenger is minimized. Some disadvantages of owning a motorcycle trike include compromising your reasons for being a motorcycle enthusiast. You stand out because of the motorcycle’s uniqueness as well as the number of passengers clamoring for a ride, when you’re the owner of a motorcycle trike.

Less efficient gas mileage is another disadvantage. Also, your motorcycle trike will be similar to driving a car, specifically in how you steer.

Finally, if accustomed to riding a two-wheeled motorcycle there will be certain habits that will need to be overcome. Some of these habits include straddling your motorcycle when idling. With the added third wheel this is not necessary. Also, when parked, the transmission will need to be put into gear to prevent the vehicle from moving on its own. In addition, the added third wheel makes the motorcycle trike wider.

Is there someone or some group out there that would benefit from having these large groups of Motorcycle Clubs who are run in a very military fashion and are made up of many ex-Military Members fighting against each other? If these Clubs all got along and worked together the world could be a very Different place! The Motorcycle world certainly would be! Are there people out there who are afraid of this happening?

Today there are very few Motorcycle Clubs left that have the Gang Mentality. Most if not all have gone back to the Brotherhood way and the word Gang in the Motorcycle Club world has become taboo. Now as Motorcycle Clubs are beginning to get back to the way it was at the start and trying to put the past behind them, I am noticing that there are more and more Biker movies and TV shows Coming out. Will these shows show MC’s in a good way? Will they go out of their way to stir up the quarrels of the past? Will they show us as mindless thugs or bullies much as the Movie Wild Hogs did? Most Important will we let them influence who we really are? Or have we learned from our mistakes? If all continues to go well we could soon be making our way into the Second Golden age of Motorcycle Club Brotherhood back to where it all Started !!!

All Bikers need to ask themselves, Are you part of the Problem or part of the Solution?

Many of the “facts” in this story are based on Legend and Myth as much of the history of the Motorcycle and it’s Culture was lost in the great rebellion of 2057.

Taken from a history book in the year 2095…

Motorcycles And The Culture They Inspire 1868-2017

Motorcycles started out as steam engines strapped on to bicycles in 1868. Soon after the gas engine took its place in the 1900′s there were Motorcycle shops and Dealers all over the World. For awhile, Motorcycle were simply used as transportation. In 1907, when Henry Fords, Ford Motor Company, released the Model-T at a price everyone could afford, the Motorcycle soon went from a necessity to a luxury item.

In the 1940′s, the Motorcycle Culture really took off. An organization called the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) held races and events all over the United States of America. In 1947, held an event in Hollister California. This event was attended by many of the AMA Racing Teams and Motorcycle Clubs. This event marks the beginning of the separation of Motorcyclists which eventually led to the end of Motorcycling in the year 2017.

Newspapers, being what they where in 1947, got a hold of some pictures of Motorcyclists having fun at the event. The press decided to embellish the facts and transformed the story of the first large motorcycle rally into a torrid tale of Bikers taking over a small town! More negative news stories soon followed. Eventually Hollywood joined the Biker bashing by releasing movies that portrayed Motorcyclists as lawless and evil.

The American Motorcycle Association, trying to end the bad press, responded by basically saying that the Newspapers had lied and that it was only 1% of Motorcyclists that caused problems. This resulted in the first ripple in the Unity of the Motorcycle World and the Medias’ hatred of Bikers.

Around the same time, the AMA began adding new requirements for motorcycles to be able to race in AMA sanctioned Races. Those whose motorcycles didn’t meet the new AMA requirements started their own Race Leagues. Because the new Race Leagues/Clubs were not AMA sanctioned, they soon became known as Outlaw Race Leagues/Clubs. Although many Bikers raced in both the AMA and Outlaw Leagues, another great separation had begun.

By the late1960′s, the separation of the Motorcycle Community was becoming more evident. There were now three basic groups. The American Motorcycle Association, Outlaw Clubs, and 1%er Clubs. All 1%ers were Outlaws, but not all Outlaws were considered 1%ers. Over the years, the AMA continued to grow. In addition to racing, they began to champion Motorcycle Rights and Safety. As time went on, others formed independent groups whose goals were similar to that of the AMA. Their inability or outright refusal to work together with the other groups resulted in a further separation of the Motorcycle Community and Culture.

In the 1970′s, rifts began to grow between some of the Outlaw/1% Clubs. By the 1990′s, the media had inflated stories about the conflicts into proportions that rivaled the tall tales of the old west. These tall tales invoked fear of the Outlaw/1% Clubs. Motorcycle Riders were lied to,. They were told to stay away from and fear the Outlaw/1% Clubs. The media began referring to Motorcycle Clubs as Motorcycle Gangs, a term meant to instill fear into the heart of the Public. Stories and rumors began surfacing, claiming these “Gangs” were ruthless and would kill or maim people for little or no reason at all.

By the early 21st Century, every minor conflict between Outlaw/1% Clubs was made into a book, made for TV movie, or docudrama. Titles like “Motorcycle Gang Wars In Your Back Yard” were common. Although real wars, conflicts, and suffering were occurring worldwide, the Corporate owned media chose to report fiction over fact. “The world is full of Kings and Queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams…Black Sabbath”.

In 2009, a conflict between two rival Clubs was captured on Video at a “Biker Build Off” event. The coverage by the media and negative publicity was so overwhelming that in 2010, the United States Government passed a law banning all Outlaw/1% Clubs. In response, the Outlaw/1% Clubs put aside their differences and formed “Bikers United”.

The Bikers fought back stating the law was unconstitutional and un-American. Even as late as 2010, workers still clung to the misguided belief that they had rights and lived in a free Nation. The Bikers fought hard and came very close to winning, but without the support of the Motorcycle Rights Groups, The AMA Clubs, and the Independent Riders, all of whom had been brainwashed into believing the Outlaw Clubs were criminal organizations, they were defeated.

Many of the Outlaw/1% Clubs tried to stay together. The Clubs went underground, but after many raids and constant Government harassment, they had all but disappeared. In 2013, in an effort to ensure that the Outlaw/1% Clubs never returned, the Government decided to outlaw all Motorcycle Clubs and organizations.

The AMA, it’s clubs, and all of the Motorcycle Rights Organizations United in an effort to battle the Governments oppression. They tried to use many of the same tactics and strategies that the Outlaw/1% Clubs used. Unfortunately, the Government was much smarter and stronger this time around. They had learned many lessons in their fierce battles with the Outlaw/1% Clubs, and they used what they had learned against the united Clubs and Organizations. With no Outlaw/1% Clubs left to assist them and without the support of the Independent Riders, the United Clubs and Organizations were defeated.

In 2015, the Government passed a law that made it illegal to even look like an Outlaw on a Motorcycle. The Independent Riders banned together to try and fight the law, but by this time their numbers were few and there wasn’t anyone left to show them how to fight for their rights. After a brief protest, they too were soundly defeated.

In 2017, What was now a “Global Government”, in its infinite wisdom, decided that Motorcycles posed a danger to the public. They passed a law banning Motorcycle manufacture and use and destroyed all existing Motorcycles. This brought to an end, the History of Motorcycles. It would take until the year 2093 before anything even close to resembling a Motorcycle reappeared.

As a historian looking back at the History of Motorcycles and the Culture it created, it amazes me how powerful the Motorcycle Culture could have been had they not let every little thing separate them. Instead of embracing something they had in common and working together to protect it, the instead let their differences, the media, and the government divide them.

By the time the Bikers realized how much they were connected and needed each other, it was too late. Their numbers were certainly sufficient to achieve victory, but their failure to come together as Brothers and Sisters and work for the common good ultimately spelled their demise. Had they been victorious, it may have been enough to stop all of the oppression and tyranny that soon followed.

History is full of stories just like this one, over and over again. The ones who love and honor Freedom the most are taken down first and the rest fall like dominoes. Until the rebellion of 2057, we as a Global Society did not realize how important it was to put aside our differences. It may have taken awhile, but we finally figured it out…Just in time!

Admit it! All of us, at one time or another, have dreamed of owning a motorcycle. Perhaps this is because of some of the iconic films that have been made over the years. The movie “Easy Rider was a good example of this. The film featured a few free souls on the open road as they explored the country, and not to mention a few other things. And who can forget Tom Cruise in “Top Gun?” Of course Cruise did not ride around on the same choppers the guys from “Easy Rider” did. No, he rode around on a rice rocket.

The symbolism was obvious here; a man who pilots a high performance jet also has and has a thrill seeking attitude must have a bike that matches his character. Heck even Arnold Schwarzenegger even rode around on a bike in the Terminator. He had to look bad, and the bike completed his ensemble. Yes, those films have had a big impact on Americana, and many of us have considered the motorcycle trader after seeing them.
