chevrolet astro- the ultimate minivan of the 80′s

Chevy vans are the trendsetters of the 80′s. With this, comes the Chevrolet Astro which has also making its waves in that decade. What makes Chevrolet Astro special compared to the other van; is that its durable body is designed to be like a mini-van and has a functional rear wheels so that it has a superb pulling capabilities. This has made a difference from the other vans which are only a 2-wheel drive.

The earlier versions of Chevrolet Astro had more truck like characteristics and did not give much ease and comfort to the driver. Fuel economy, suspension, weight and high levels of engine noise similar to trucks created some degree of problems compared to the modern day mini vans.

However, Chevrolet Astro was best suited for a large number of passengers with a greater seating capacity ideal for families. This minivan had rear seats which could be easily detached and there was considerable space provided for the cargo which was around 170 cubic feet.

In the year 1985, some new version of Chevrolet Astro debuted in the market. This is to rival Dodge Caravans and Plymouth Voyager twins which have been on its hot seat at that time. It was the initiative of GM and Ford to set the trend of the modern minivan designs leaving the predecessors of the current models obsolete.

Chevrolet Astro managed to carve a niche segment of car buyers for another two decades during this period. Compared to the older versions, Chevrolet Astro had four speed transmission that was truly automatic. It became a strong contender for GM that offered five speed manual transmission.

The next transformation in Chevrolet Astro came about in 1990 when rear wheel drives were replaced with all wheel drive. These models had a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds which was just incredible. Moreover, the extended version of Chevrolet Astro was now 10 inches longer than the older version with increased seating capacity.

With its new design also comes new add-on for the new version of Chevrolet Astro. These include air conditioning, stereo system and car accessories including cruise control systems. With the introduction of anti-lock break system and the air bag safety, drivers’ would not feel safer than this before. And when it comes to its exterior is concerned, one could not get its chic dashboard as well as the ease of its smooth controls. The Chevrolet Astro also has the power steering feature which would make it very easy for drivers to control the wheels.
