Always Store Vintage Automobiles With A Car Cover

by Dan Chandler

Vintage cars, when maintained perfectly, offer a great deal of satisfaction to the owners of these machines of yesteryear. Lots of people remember the good old days as they look upon those old antique automobiles in the car shows. It’s no wonder why folks adore these old classic cars so much. Well maintained and put together exquisitely, these classics often are shiniest up big time. The real secret to keeping classic cars in this condition is a proper fitting car cover.

Vintage cars need special care for a lot of reasons. When you think about it, this generation is entrusted with maintaining the cars of the last generation. If future generations are to see the classic cars in their original state, then we should maintain them properly. Care goes a long way. It is always easier to prevent problems before they begin. Covering your classic car with an automobile cover is a vital element to maintaining your car with excellence.

Because the cars have been out of circulation for so long, it is often hard to get a ready-made cover for a classic car. It is possible to find a classic car cover retailer or maker over the web. Maybe even eBay, but sometimes you can find them on eBay. If nothing else, you can find someone who makes car covers.

Car covers keep the dirt and ground and moisture from accumulating on your cars outer body surface. When these things collect on your car, corrosion can take place. That is the nightmare of the classic car owner. The paint job, chrome, trim, and other parts of the car’s exterior can be susceptible to corrosion. The first line of defense is the car cover acting as a barrier.

When shopping around, we suggest that you consider first where the car will be stored. There are different micro-climates in different locations. Cars that are kept in a garage do not necessarily need the same conditions that a car that is kept outside in the sun or in the shade. The fabrics will need to be different, as well as other properties of protection.

While moisture resistance is important, it is not the only thing. You need to consider the fact that the breathability of the auto cover fabric is also incredibly important. The material needs to be breathable, because otherwise dampness will accumulate underneath the material and against the car body a definite no-no. So, I do not advocate going to Wal-Mart and buying a blue tarp to cover your classic. You are asking for problems.

Also, don’t forget the softness of the material. Scuffing a nice paint job with a rough material is a terrible thing to do. When it dragged over your priceless vintage vehicle over the years, it will show in the paint job like a well worn dog path to the neighbors scrap pile. It just isn’t pretty. I’ve seen grown men cry after they realized what they did to their exquisite paint job by their own hands.

According to wherever you keep your classic, you will also want to look at the thickness of the classic car cover material. There are car covers with multiple layers that are very soft and thick, which provide protection from minor dings and scratches in the body. Often these types of covers will be very expensive, but well worth the money in my opinion. An ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure.

Finally, if all efforts fail, you need to seek out somebody who makes car covers professionally and have one custom prepared for your vintage automobile. The costs may be higher than what you expected for the high quality cover, but the rewards are far greater!
